El Reportero de la Policiaca - The Police Reporter

In and around the San Diego/Tijuana border region there exist few reporters who can say they have worked in this market for more than 20 years, but this week the region lost one of those special journalists.  I met Joel Galeana Sanchez back in the late 1990's when I first arrived to this region.  My station sent me across the border for a week to observe how Mexican news stations operated.

My news director wanted me to make contacts and let Televisa know that we wanted to be partners.   Everyone at Televisa was gracious.  I learned so much that week.   One of the reporters was el Senor Joel.  His beat was law enforcement, and in a thriving city like Tjuana there was never a shortage of police action.  Joel was that type of reporter who knew when a big arrest was about to go down before it happened.   His photographers seemed to admire and respect him.    I recall watching him type his script into the computer.   His fingers hit that keyboard like nobody's business.

The other thing I remember about Joel, is how fast he spoke Spanish.  He was not a Tijuana native, from what I understand, but you would never know it.   He had become a household name and people trusted him.

He died this week following an illness.   His presence will surely be remembered and missed.   RIP Joel Galeana Sanchez.
